REFERENDUM ' SUGGESTED

The first steps in an organised effort to obtain a local measure of daylight saving in place of the Bill -defeated in the House were taken at a meeting of sports' followers. '.. ,- . Representatives of ten organisations attended, and it was decided to invite the City Council, the Chamber of Commerce and other bodies to join in petitioning the Government to take a referendum on daylight saving at the General Election," failing which it is suggested that employees and employers in the main centres of the Dominion should come to a mutual arrangement with .the transport services and retail houses to observe daylight saving hours next summer. BILL TO BE INTRODUCED WELLINGTON, This Day. ' With reference to the Bill he intends to introduce with the object of granting power to municipalities, counties, ana town boards to adopt summer time, Mr Sidey told a "Post" reporter to-day that he was assured there would be no great difficulty in. the matter of post office time. 'Post office clocks exposed to the public would conform to local time. /There would be adjustments required in the railway timetable, but that would be so under any system of local summer time, whether, by advanc-1 irig the, clocks or not. The difficulties in 3 the way of the introduction of t voluntary scheme were ! so great that those who had been, considering -the question felt that legislation was necessary .if local schemes were to be satisfactorily and successfully introduced.
