Some 27,000 spectators were present at the English League team’s first match in Auckland against New Zealand,’ and were rewarded by seeing their, own men secure a creditable win over, the formidable visitor's. At half-time New Zealand led by 9 to 3. After New Zealand had scored two penalty goals Elleby got across for England and the visitors began to look dangerous, combining much better. The local side held off the attacks and List increased the total for them with, a try, which was converted. An amusing incident happened at the kick-off in the second spell. Only seven New Zealanders wero on the field, and the rest came tumbling out of the dressing room in a hurry. New Zealand secured another penalty goal and then two tries, after which, England pulled themselves together and put on two tries, both converted, but they could get no further, and New Zealand won by 17 to 13.

I The referee, Mr Bull, in reply, said the Englishmen did not play the game', and he considered they were “a. lot of squealers.” 1 The gate takings at the match totalled 'about £2OOO.
