FUNERAL OF MR M. S. SMITH

LARGE AND REPRESENTATIVE ATTENDANCE The general respect and esteem in which the late Mr Martin S. Smith was held was manifested at the funeral on Saturday afternoon. The cortege contained 50 cars, carrying between 200 and 300 mourners. Among those presentwere the directors and entire staffs (with one individual exception owing to illness) of the Nelson “Evening Mail”, also the runner bays; the Mayor of Nelson (Mr W. J. Moffatt); the Hon. W. W. Snodgrass, M.L.C., representatives of the Rechabite order; the trustees of the St. John’s Methodist Church; and numerous other citizens representing all classes of the community. Scores of beautiful floral tributes were sent.

The pall bearers were Messrs A. G. Nightingale, F. W. Greenslade, W. Tiller and S. Collier (representing the Methodist Church), and Mr K. 0- Lucas (director) and Mr W. H. Simpson (subeditor) of the .“Evening Mail.” The casket containing the remains of the deceased was first taken to the Methodist Church, where a service was conducted by the Rev. P._ N. Knight. The hymns, “Rock of Ages ’ “Abide With Me” and “For Ever With the Lord” were sung, and portions of chapters xxi and xxii of Revelation were read.

In the course of his address the Rev. P. N. Knight emphasised the splendid personality of the deceased; his long association with tho church, and his influence for good, especially among the young people. The funeral procession then proceeded to the Cemetery, where the last rites were conducted by *the Rev. P. N. Knight. . . . . The Rechabite service was read by C-hiefjßitler Brother H. J. Sharp.
