SEDDON SHIELD
(To the Editor) ■■ ~ ■ \ a Sir,—Quite a number of people, seem suddenly to be interesting themselves in football these days, and more particularly in,the Seddon Shield. Some are csing loud speakers, and their fjerco denunciations and vicious' terms, indicate a good deal of static. . However, I am an old, Rugby player, and I do not think the condemnation of*th'e." Rugby Union is quite.warranted. Personally I would much prefer to see the Seddon Shield remain in Nelson until taken away by a better team, but I understand the Union yielded to the advances, made by :ts sister 'Union* , at Westport to take the Shield to ( that quarter in order to give a fillip to the Rugby game, which from reports, was suffering from, much opposition., -Our Union in a,spirit of good-will thus agreed, and at the same time had,a eye on-giving oiir splendid. Shield team a well 'deserved trip. There didn't seem much wrong about that from a sporting point of view., Hoover, the Rugby Union .have fallen foul, of . a section of the public, Some of whom according to several correspondents, appear to be agreeably impressed with the £.s.d. side, of the question..lmpressed .should really be put in capital letters. And some o£ your correspondents are so well versed in Rugby Union affairs as to savour a.close connection with that body. In,conclusion ,1 suppose there must always be heroes too, and .as the noble band who voted to keep the Seddon Shield in Nelson have been so much, honoured/* they will no doubt go down to posterity in the imagination of some people as little Lindberghs or Kingsam, etc., J OLD BOY.'
