Splendid nominations have been received for the Nelson Jockey Club's meeting to he held on 3rd and sth May. Seventeen horses have been entered for the Clip, and two that, appeal at this distance are Black Mint and Joy Bird. Last, year's winner was Lady Desmond, hut, Mr T. Newman’s brilliant, mare, does not appear in the list this year. Several winners and placed horses at recent meetings are among those entered for the 'coming fixtures. 'The trotting events have attracted a particularly fine entry. The Marlborough 'Racing Club’s Autumn meeting opens at Trentham today and will he- continued on Monday. Thnrndale. who looks in the best of health, is moving freelv in his work. He is engaged at South Canterbury, where he mav earn some more. inoSiev next week.

Prince Humphrey finished well in the All-aged Stakes at Avondale, heating all but .Aussie, and returning a much better price than the winner. This colt lias tun some good races this season, only being out of a place on two occasions. He was third in the. Avondale Stakes, but won the Welcome Stakes at Auckland. He was beaten hv Childsplay in the Wellesley Stakes, and was unplaced m the. Great Northern Eoal Stakes. However. he won the Royal Stakes. Prince Humphrey was second to Paganelli in the Wellington Stakes, hut was unplaced in the North Island Challenge Stakes. ’He was runner-up to Episode in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes, and therefore has a good record as a two-year-old. He should he a pretty useful three-vear-old next season.

Hipo got, caught in the. tapes at the start, of the Foley Memorial Handicap at -Avondale, and carried a, strand of it till the wav round with him.

E. Stanway. who has been riding with a fair amount, of success in jumping races during the last few years, has decided to try his luck in Australia, and will sail on Monday next to Melbourne. Stanwn.y rode Archibald to victory in the Brighton Hurdle Race at. Ellersiie two seasons ago, besides riding numerous other winners over hurdles and steeplechase courses. The Te Awanuitu owner-trainer Geo. Paul has entered both Aussie and Awalere for the Storey Memorial Handicap of one miio and a-quarter, to he decided <>n the first- day of the Waikato autumn mooting. Both those geldings have, displayed brilliant form up to eight furlongs, and as they are now thoroughly seasoned the extra distance may not be beyond them. On his running at Feilding Olympic promises to make good as a hurdler. He. is improving with every rare, and it seems only a matter of the Polydamon gelding going on all right to do well over the small sticks.

The stake-money for the. Wanganui Winter meeting shows a big out. compared with last- year, and it will be interesting to see what- effort this has on the nominations.

Another winner of good races has to he entered up in the list, of gift horses. This is Branson, who brought, off a big surprise in the. Foley Memorial Handicap, at the Avondale meeting’, and defeated a good field, including Star Stranger. Branson was bred by Mr Gerald Stead at Cambridge, being by the imported horse Greyspear out of Garst.on. He was not, asked to carry Mr Stead’s colours, but, on the other hand, was made n present of to Mr Norman Banks, who later sold the gelding to his present owners. Messrs Davis and Bennett. They first put the gelding into Claude Whale’s

hands to prepare. but about eighi months ago his (pini'tors wore changed and lie was placed in P. Scnlly’s stable at Te Rapa. For Scally, Branson soon made good, hub his win in the Foley Memorial is easily his best, to date. 11 is party were not over-confident, but were unite prepared to see him go a good rare. and. as the dividend was a very substantial one. it- was a case of getting o lot. for a little. J. Cammiek, who rode Branson, is attached to J. Buchanan's stable at Ellerslie, and the riding fee for Saturday's rare was £lO.

The performance of Padlock in wint'ing the President's Handicap at. .Addington on Saturday in 4.26 3-5, means that, the son of Hal Zolock is now entitled to rank with the elect of tin 1 land. The gelding has had a meteoric rise from the novice class to the, very best, company, and as lie is reported to have made short, work of the opposition on Saturday, it will he interesting to see wliat estimate the handieappers form of liis ability in future. Free -Advice's success in the three-year-old event at .Addington' proved her right, to rank as one of the best of her age. Daphne d'Oto probably being the (illy three-year-old who could heat the .A tick la ml-owned hut Canterbury-1 rained filly. When Free -Advice started in the Great Northern Derby she created a most, favourable impression, as she raced very prominently. She later-won a race at the last- New Brighton meeting, but was placed second to Baron Bingen owing to alleged interference. Free Advice won again at Wellington last, month. Sim is by Blue Mountain King from Intaglio, a sister to that fine mare Onyx. Her racing experience was a valuable asset on Satuvdnv.

Several horses bettered their handicaps at. -Addington on Saturday, the most notable, being as follows: —Padlock. 2 2-sscc; Quality, 0 l-ssec ; f.ady Matchlight. Osec; -Acre, 3 l-ssee ; Native Queen 3 3-ssec; Native Star. 3 3-ssee.

TJilloii lluon must be one of the most unlucky pacers in commission. The chestnut gelding has won only one, small race, but on numerous occasions be has just been beaten. His next appearance will be at the Wellington meeting. Nellie Parson has become, temperamental. and at. Hawora she. -caused owner-trainer Leo Berkett a lot. of worry, says a. northern writer. -At Wanganui the previous week, starting from the back of the field, the Neil Denis mare put up two very fine races, on the strength of which she was given a bright prospect of winning at Haw era off the front line, but she refused to strike, a gait either time, and her backers did not get a spin for tlieir cash. It looks as if the Hope pacer will only take it on when placed among tho rearguard. Padlock's victory in the President's Handicap at Addington brought his winnings for the season up to £1755. the result of five wins and a second out of seven starts. No fewer than 174 acceptances were received for the eight events to be decided at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting to bn held to-day, an average of over 21 horses per race. LIMERICK AND GLOAMING Tn view of the possibility of Limerick challenging the record of stake earnings credited to Gloaming over the latter’s period of racing, extending to nine years old. it. is interesting to-compare Limerick's total to date with the. sum won by Gloaming at. the same stage of their respective careers. It has, however, to he noted that Gloaming was not, raced at two years old, while Limerick won £1595 at that age. The following table covers the period named :
