FIRE AT AUCKLAND

EXTENSIVE DAMAGE

AUCKLAND, This Day. A fire in the top floor.of the Mining Chambers, Queen street, near midnight on Sunday, caused hundreds of pounds damage by water to Hugh Wright Limited's drapery stock on the ground floor. Although part of the roof collapsed above the Belmont tea rooms on the third storey, and the floor was well, alight when the brigade arrived, a notable save was made. Extensive damage was done to offices on the second floor, and smoke and wafer also poured into other premises on the ground floor—. Mrs Ansenne, florist, and Jamieson's tobacconist shop.

FURNITURE FACTORY GUTTED AUCKLAND, This Day. Damage estimated at £BOOO to £IO,OOO was done by a fire at 4.30 this morning at Tonsbn, Garlick's furniture factory in Karangahape road. All that remains of the ground floor is a mass of burned and charred carpets, lino'materials, furniture, and three upturned safes. MARTON, This Day. A fire earlv on Sunday morning destroyed the stables of Clarke, carrier, at Hunterville, and severely damaged a tailor's shop owned by W. Hodge, and the otfices of the Farmers' Distributing Coy. The flames had a .strong hold when discovered, and, as the buildings were very old, and as dry as tinder,' there was little chance of saving the contents, which included two motor cars, a motor lorry, a motor cycle, several gigs, and stable equipment. The loss to Clark-. Hodge, and the Farmers' is considerable, but is covered by insurance. . The flames lit the country for miles around, and despite the early hour a large crowd gathered. DATuAGE AT A GARAGE

INVERCARGILL, This Day. At 2.30 this morning a fire was discovered in the back portion of Russell's garage. The flames bad a good hold when discovered by the caretaker, whose prompt action in calling the brigade and using the hose on the premises prevented the flames spreading, the fire being confined to- the part of the building used for storing bulk spare parts and second-hand vehicles. Four cycles, 23 cars and trucks, and nine cases 'of motor accessories were more or less damaged. Approximately £4OOO damage was done to the. stock, and about £2OOO to the building . The cause of the outbreak is unknown.
