ENJOYABLE PICNICS
During tins last week ideal picnic weather prevailed. Two Stoke picnics wore held. The Stoke Methodists held their picnic on Wednesday at Simmonds' Hush, Spring Grove, going by train, where- a most enjoyable time was spent by young sod old. ,O f o Saturday fhe, St. Barnabas! Suhflay school held -'their picnic at the Wai-iti Domain. 'This is a most perfect spot tor picnics, as there is plenty of shade, good drinking water, fireplace, tables, and last but not least splendid bathing pools close by in the river. Through the courtesy of the Railway Department the train stopped at the Domain crossing, which is a mile beyond tho Wai-iti station. -■ This spot can be. thoroughly recommended to Nelson and country residents who wish to go to an ideal picnic place. The children of the Stoke Sunday Schools and Bible classes resume again next Sunday at 10 o'clock. This dry spell is being felt, in the country districts, and water supplies are. getting very short. The size, of fruit of the later varieties of apples will also be affected unless rain falls within a reasonably short time.
PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION At the monthly meeting of the Stoke Progressive Association the principal business was consideration of a modified water scheme. It was felt that without the co-operation of Tahuna the larger scheme was out of the question, but that a cheaper scheme, was possible, which would be quite sufficient for Stoke. Jt was resolved, on the motion of Messrs Gilbert and Pickup, that the chairman (Mr Macmahon) be authorised to confer with the, County Engineer in connection with the preparation of a reduced estimate, also to ascertain what financial' assistance might be expected from the Mental Department for their share of' the water. '
Mr Macmahon stated that it had been suggested to him that an Electric Power Board be formed in. the Waimeas to take over the business at present owned by the'Electric Supply Company. It was resolved on the motion of Messrs Price and Scott that a public meeting be held on Wednesday, Bth February, at 8 p.m. to consider the matter, and that Messrs Ellis and Burton of the Electric Supply Company be asked to attend the meeting and explain their proposals.
