CORONATION OF EMPEROR LONG CEREMONIES BEGUN TOKIO, 18th Jan. There were gorgeous ceremonies this morning at the Imperial Palace, being the first of a long'series of ceremonies and rites loading to tlm coronation of the Mikado at Kyoto.on 10th November. To-day, the Emperor, accompanied by the Empress, and the entire court, in the brocades and silicon costumes of ancient times, went to .“The Palace of Awe,” tho most sacred shrine of Japan, in which lie the spirits of the Imperial ancestors, and notified these of the date of the. coronation. Tho scene was one of great splendour, with Divine treasures, which were brought direct from Heaven when the Imperial throne was founded, forming part of the Enipcror’s regalia. CROWN PRINCE ENGAGED DAUGHTER OP AMBASSADOR TOKIO, 18th Jan. After tho formal, announcement of the Engagement of the heir-apparent, Prince Chichibu, to the daughter of the Ambassador to America, Mr Matsudaira, it is expected that an announcement wifi be made of' the betrothal of Prince Takamatsu to Miss Kikuko Tokugawa, aged 17, daughter of the late Prince Yoshi■hisa Tokukawa, and grand-daughter of the last Shogun. She is a relative of the Consul-General for Australia, M. Tokugawa. The betrothal will probably take place before Princo Takamatsu sails for Australia.
