CHICAGO RULED BY GUNMEN
AFRAID TO CONVICT MURDERER
A REIGN OF TERROR
The reign of terror established by gunmen in Chicago is significantly illustrated by the acquittal last month of "Lefty" Lewis, a notorious gang-leader, accused of murdering Max Braverman, a rag and junk dealer.. Some months ago Lewis conceived the idea of organising the junkmen of Chicago into a trade union, with himself as their salaried head. ■
He summoned them to a meeting, and when Braverman opposed him, shot him dead, according to the testimony of eight witnesses. '
The police had the utmost, difficulty in bringing these witnesses v to court. The house of one of them was ) bombed and the witness himself threatened wUh death.
y For a" month'the. court'vainly tried to impanel a jury. After 500 -citizens had been excused from .serving, the judge declared that terrorism was responsible for their-, unwillingness to quv.ifv any sit in judgment on Lewis. Five 'nundred more were th'"i ex.onined, and dfinally twelve men were selected. .
The jury brought in a verdict of "Not Guilty." For a long time one juror stood out for a conviction, declaring: "1 couldn't;.face' niy family if I votsd for an acquittal." Finally he was won oyer after his fellow-jurymen had impressed him with the fact that he was "marking himself, and his family for a bomb if he persisted in holding out for a con viction." , .'.
