LONDON STOCK EXCHANGE
A QUIET OPENING (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association) LONDON, 14th Jan. The Stock Exchange opened tho year quietly so far as the gilt-edged market concerned, chief interest centring in what measure of success attended the conversion of a portion of the Government loan. This closed on Wednesday but the result will not be announced till 18th January. It is*, believed that the result was fairly satisfactory and this should have a good effect-. The announcement yesterday of a new India,loan of £7,500,000 at 4} per cent at 91),- came as a surprise, but it ha’d little effect on prices except those of blfief India- stocks, which showed sharp 'falls. ■•. . There is talk of a Smith Australian loan coming-shortly hut it is not expected till the India loan is out of tho way,
