WILTON’S BUSH
OUTBREAK OF EIRE (United Press Association; WELLINGTON, This Day. Late yesterday afternoon a fire broke out in a city ptjrk known as Wilton’s Bush, and though the brigade tackled it, the best part of an acre of fine bush was destroyed. There is hot too much hush left as it is, and this further reduction is most unfortunate.
JEWELLERS’ SHOP GUTTED' WHAKATANE. This Day. Fire completely gutted D. Bergman’s jewellery shop in'jthe Strand at 2 o’clock on Sunday morning. The shop forms a part of a- theatre building and the theatre itself was" only saved through the prompt action of the brigade and the excellent pressure of the borough water supply. The building was owned by C’nlder and MacDearniid. • The insurance is not available.
DWELLING BURNED AT CLIVE
NAPIER, This Day. A fire totally destroyed a six-roomed house at Clive at 1 a.m. this morning. It was owned by W. J. Kelly of Napier and occupied by W. H. Thurlcw. Insurances oh the house wove £7OO, and on the furniture £SOO, in the National Insurance.
BOWLING PAVILION DAMAGED
AUCKLAND, This Day. The Auckland Bowling Club’s pavilion at Grafton road, • the oldest in the southern hemisphere, was badly damaged by fire early this morning. One corner of the building and a large part of the roof were destroyed, and mue.h damage was done also to the furniture and fittings, and members’ property. Most of the records and trophies were saved and the. caretaker's home adjoining was undamaged. The pavilion was not. used by members yesterday. Presumably the fire was caused by someone breaking into the building and clrop' L _ig a lighted match.
The pavilion and the caretaker’s house are insured for £2700, the members’ property for £SOO, and ■furniture for £l5O. all in the New Zealand Insurance Office. The greens—bowling, tennis and croquet—escaped with very little damage.
TIMBER MILL DESTROYED
_ AUCKLAND, This Day. Casey’s limber mill at Freeman’s Bay, together with the machinery, was destroyed by fire early this morning. An adjacent box factory was undamaged. The mill was situated in the vicinity of boatbuilding yards and petrol stores, but fortunately the wind was blowing in the opposite direction. Insurances on the mill and contents are £3500.
