This.list of names was Handed to the County office staff, which proceeded to scan the registers of licensed drivers in order to ascertain, whether any of the persons whose names had been taken had' not taken out. licenses. The names included those of a number of visitors to Marlborough and inquiries had to he made from Nelson, Christchurch, Takaka, Blenheim, (Murchison, and Waimea local authorities regarding these motorists’ right to drive. The result of the inquiries was notified to the County . Council on Friday (says the “Express”), when the County Clerk (Mr 4* J- Maclaine) reported that eightunlicensed drivers had been discovered: whilst one motorist had refused to stop when called on. to do so, and had nearly run. down the * inspector. Tins man, it had been .found, actually had a license, whilst most of the others had since taken out permits. The chairman (Mr A. M. W. Adams) moved thiit those who had been caught without licenses be written to and informed that they must take out licenses at once and that the man who refused to stop be prosecuted. Councillor A. J. . Milks seconded the motion.
Councillor C. J. Bryant questioned whether a prosecution would succeed seeing that the inspector had not been specifically appointed as traffic inspector by the Council. In "view of tins possibility of failure in any proceedings taken, the motion was withdrawn after, a slibit discussion. Councillor C. Noes then moved, and Councillor Bryant seconded that the County Engineer (Mr. B. Hundleby) and tho County Inspector (Mr E. P. Envvri'gljt) bo appointed traffic inspectors and empowered to take all necessary proceedings' to enforce the various motor vehicle regulations. •
