LAWN TENNIS

NELSON CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNA* MI! NT CONTINUATION OF PLAY Play in the Nelson Provincial Lawn Tennis Championship meeting has so far been carried out under the very best of weather conditions. The progress of some events has been unduly delayed owing to the absence of competitors when called upon and the desire of the committee to meet players wherever possible. This is perhaps desirable up to a certaiu point, but the privilego extended can be abused. For instance in one. event some competitors had reached the third round while one of the first round games had not been played. Scratching is the only means to be adopted in these circumstances if the. tournament is to be concluded within a reasonable time. Up to last evening the semi-finals in only one or two events had been reached; but considerable progress was made this forenoon, and it is expected that some of the finals will be finished before play ends for the day. One of the most strenuous games yesterday was in the men's championship singles between Foden (Wellington) and Snodgrass. The first set went in favour of Snodgrass 7-5; and the second set went to Foden 10-8. In the third set Foden established a strong lead of 5-1, but the local player took the next two games and had a good chance of taking ■ the third, but failed to do so. Foden played a much steadier game than Snodgrass, his placing being exceptionally good. VViiliams, of Wellington, is playing well, and should reach the final if he continues to show his present form. In the ladies' championship singles none of the games went beyond two sets. The further results are:— MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES.
