Mr W. H. Knapp, of St. Vincent 'street, yesterday attained his 84th birthday having been horn in the early days of the settlement, in 1843. For many years he resided at Spring Grove, where he was engaged in hop and fruitgrowing and general farming. Th his younger days Mr Knapp was a representative cricketer and he still maintains his interest in the game.
The induction of the Rev. G. A. Grossman as vicar of St. Thomas's Church by the Right Rev. W. C. Sadlier, Bishop of Nelson, took place in the church .on Friday evening before a representative congregation of parishioners. The Bishop in an eloquent sermon on the nature of the church, commended the new vicar to the parishioners as a man of scholastic ability, earnest and sincere in his work. The Rev. G. A. Grossman conducted both services at St. Thomas's Church on Sunday. Cm Tuesday evening a welcome social by parishioners will be given in St. Thomas's schoolroom.
