MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE

NELSON REMITS Remits to be submitted to the forthcoming Municipal Association Conference were considered by. the City Council last evening and adopted. One dealing with superannuation provides: "That the Local Authorities Superannuation Act. 1908, and amendments, be repealed and that in substitution therefor the Government be asked to establish a fund to be contributed to by local authorities, such fund to provide for tfiu superannuation of all their permanent employees, arid that it lie made compulsory for all such employees to contribute thereto. The fund to be incorporated with amount administered as part of the National Provident Fund." Councillor Harley hoped that consideration would be given to old servants of loon! bodies, as this had been a stumbling block in the past. Old servants were willing to come in under the scheme, but were unable to do so owing to the heavy payments they would have to make. Councillor Harley was prepared to move an amendment on these lines: but the Mayor said the point would not be overlooked at the conference, and the amendment was not piessed. Another remit was to the effect that municipal trading undertakings be placed on the same footing as private concerns; and a third that legislation be enacted making it lawful for a local authority to refund moneys paid in error whether in ignorance of the fact or of the law.
