FROM AUCKLAND HAIRDRESSING SALOON

(By. Telegraph-Special to "The Mail"> AUCKLAND, 2nd December. The Akarana Maori Association discussed correspondence with the proprietor of a city hair/dressing saloon with regard to the exclusion of Maori customers, in respect of which the secretary of the association had _ written pointing out that some of its members held very responsible positions. Some were personal friends of the Prime Minister and others had conversed with the Governor-General. Others had dined with the Archbishop. ' The proprietor of the saloon wrote in reply that he had always excluded all coloured gentlemen from his saloon, and would continue oh similar lines. The secretary was instructed to reply regretting, that the proprietor did not appreciate the fine effort of the Maori to equalise his social status with that of the European. ,■ It was also decided to state that the association considered that quality of whiteness was not an essential to a gentleman.
