LITTER ON THE HIGHWAY
ENGLISH OBSERVER'S CENSUS A rebuke to those .who. throw litter on the highways is contained in a contribution to the Social Service Bulletin, in! which a correspondent gives the result of ! a census of rubbish and littler made in; an hour on one mile of main road near Oxford. No effort, it is stated, was made to pry into the undergrowth or 'ditches, but only such, rubbish as could easily bo seen by anyone walking.along the road was counted. The figures are: Cigarette packets, 277; match boxes, 92 ; tobacco wrappers, 7; newspapers, 61; omnibus tickets, 334.; chocolate wrappers 51; peel of oranges, 21; bamum skins, 9.; bottles,' 13; food wrappers,, 275; unclassified paper, 582; rags, 29; miscellaneous, 52; total, 1809 , , The miscellaneous included a straw hat, seven heaps of cinders, five piles of carbide, a broken plate, two broken cups,, several- tins and jars, a, rope,, a telegraph wire insulator, and a piece of bread. The remains from a large luncheon party which had .been thrown into a ditch defied closer investigation, and was counted six, among the food wrappers. Two blackbirds . and a mouse were observed removing the.edible, portions.
