Gable Association) > , LONDON, 29th November, i ■■ Watkin James Williams, aged 46, a shipowner, was sentenced to a year's gaol and ordered to pay the costs of the prcsecution on 13 counts in connection with sending out the British steamers Eastway and Tideway in an unseaworthycondition. The Eastway foundered, with the losaof 23 lives, in a hurricane in the Bermudas. The Attorney-General alleged'that the /ships were persistently overloaded from foreign ports. The Judge's summing up pointed out that although Williams said he told his marine superintendent to instruct captains (that they must not overload, he had not called the superintendent as a witness. The case was of the gravest importance to the shipping community and sailors. »
