NEW ROAD
.SHORTER ROUTE TO CANTERBURY
MOTORISTS IMPRESSED
(By Telegraph.—Special to "The Mail.")
CIIRISTCHURCIL l()i.h June
Professor Arnold Willis's sclieine lo bring Reeflon to within si\. hours' run of ChrisU lunch by completing 26 miles of road between The Poplars (soma little distance past llnnnier) and iMaruia Springs (West Coast) was mentioned yesterday by mntorisls, who expressed themselves as being favourably impressed with it.
One inotorisl said that if the road could be formed it would make the journey to the Coast far more popular than it was at present; while at the same lime it would, lie thought, bring Nelson nearer to Christciiurch tiian by the present east coast route. Another advantage it, would have would be to provide ;i route which could be used when the road from Springfield lo Otira was rendered impassable through wet weather.
"The opening of such a road," said another inotorisl. "would result in a great increase of motor traffic between Christ church and the Coast, as it would enable people to reach Wcstport and other centres in less time than was possible in the present circumstances. It is a subject which I hope will be discussed by the Canterbury Automobile Association and the South Island Motor Union.''
