BRITAIN'S FIRM ATTITUDE
EVASIVE REPLY TO BRITISH NOTE

Protracted and difficult negotiations seem to be indicated by tho evasive attitude reflected in Cairo's reply to the British Note regarding the Egyptian army changes and the position of the Sirdar. The Foreign Office, following upon week-end consultations with members of Cabinet, sent Lord Lloyd a memorandum which will enable him to make a series of pertinent inquiries, and upon the answers given thereto, will depend Britain's future course of action. It is understood the Foreign Office made it clear that there can be no bargaining on the subject of the defence of Egypt, for which Britain intends to remam solely responsible.
DEFINITE BINDING .PLEDGES ; ;, . DEMANDED ■' i' ' ' • ' ■• ■ The. British Government, has instructed Lord Lloyd to inform the Egyptian Government that Britain requires definite binding pledges regarding the Egyptian army, and is determined to insist on a final satisfactory settlement for preventing the army from becoming an instrument of political intrigues.
