EIGHT "WITH OCTOPUS PORT TOWNSEND, Ist June. A. E. Hook, a well-known American diver, fought a terrific tinder-water battle with an octopus. His mate had been down some time, when the movements of his lines and a sudden S.O.S. sent Hook below to see what was wrong. . The second diver was in the grip of a. big octopus 50ft' below the surface. Hook went for. it with knives, but it was.not until an hour later that the horror, cut to ribbons, released its victim. .. Hook, exhausted, was ..then .able to take his mate's body to the surface:
