COST OF EDUCATION
140 PER CENT INCREASE IN TEN YEARS

WELLINGTON, This Day.
The Minister of Education, in welcoming the Council of Education to-day, said that they were capable of giving good advice on many problems, and it : was then" duty to advise upon educa-, tional matters. It was for the Council to consider the matter of agricultural education which was of great importance. Physical. instruction of primary scholars \vas another. Was the presentsystem of travelling instructors the best that could be devised, or should there be concentration on training colleges arid secondary schools? Hostels were another problem. Expenditure on education had increased from £1,750,000 in 1916-17 to £3,SD3 1 ,000 in 1926-27. This was an.increase of 140 per cent. The building programme had increased to an enormous extent since the war.
There had been a remarkable expansion of post-primary education. The cost of building had greatly increased too, but the Department was acquiring sites ahead of. actual requirements, in this way effecting a great saving.
