EXPLOSION AT CRACOW

TEN PEOPLE KILLED

(By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association)

WARSAW, 6th June. At least ten people were/ killed by the powder explosion at Cracow, due to decomposition of Austrian explosives stored for ten years. More than two hundred people were seriously injured and there is half a million sterling damage. The disaster occurred during service time and shattered every window in Cracow churches, causing panics, in which a number were injured. There was a similar panic at the hospitals, many sick running out in the belief that it was an earthquake.

The officer in charge of the magazine was blinded.

Fort Witkowice nearby was practically demolished. 1 i At first the explosion was believed to be due to foul play, and several arrests were made, but that idea is now abandoned.

Fortunately only 40,000 kilograms of powder out of 133,000 exploded.
