CHRISTCHURCH, This Day At a meeting of the Christchurch branch of the W.C.T.U. a vote of sympathy was passed to the relatives of Miss' Ruth Atkinson, who was for many vears president of the Union's branch at Nelson, and at on« time president of the. National W.C.T.U. x TRIBUTES FROM PROHIBITION LEAGUE Special reference was made last night at a meeting oi the Nelson executive of the Prohibition League to the recent death' r»f Miss Atkinson. The Rev. P. N. Knight presided. Mrs Watson, in moving the following motion, spoke of the wonderful way in which the deceased lady had helped in every good work: —"That we place on record our very deep appreciation of Miss Atkinson's service to the cause of prohibition in. this district. We remember with gratitude to God the work she had been enabled to do on behalf of the suffering and oppressed, and pray that the lesson of the life so sacrificed would lead others to lay themselves on the same altar of sacrifice." Mr F. V. Knapp. in seconding the motion, spoke of Miss Atkinson as a woman of rare attainment who had do- >' voted her life to the cause of temperance and social reform. They owed to her more than anyone could possibly say. Mr H. Grinstead, representing the headquarters of the New Zealand Alliance, expressed the sympathy of the Alliance with the relatives of Miss Atkinson and also with the loral league. The name of Atkinson was an honoured name in the Prohibition movement in New Zealand, and the life and work of Miss Atkinson, had added further honour. It was undoubtedly owing to the abundant labours of such women and men that the prohibition cause could Jook forward to final and complete victory.
