NEW YORK, 24th May
Naval divers will attempt during the slimmer to recover 850,000 dollars of gold from the steamer Brother .Jonathan, which sank off the Pacific coast in July, 1865, with two hundred passengers in one of the most tersific gales in the history of the Pacific. The hulk, in addition to gold which was part of the army pay roll, is also believed to contain valuable civil war records, the recovery of which will enable the Government to adjust hundreds of disputed pensions. The venture at present .is privately financed, and the results of it will be divided arhohg participants unless the Government assumes the project officially, upon which it will reap the entire benefit of the anticipated harvest.
