In a statement made to the Police by Jarries s Hughes ;in'connection, with, the disappearance of.' tha/child Snith, at Poolamacca station, near Broken Hill, he said "he put Jean Smith pn a horse, which became frightened when'hi* pulled out a .handkerchief, and threw the girl. As she showed no signs of life after a quarter of an hour and fearing Ee would be blamed for putting her on the horse, he 'buried her body in a rabbit hole, which he deepened. He was sure she was dead when buried.
