OUTBREAKS IN MANCHESTER THRLE AT THF WEEKEND EXTENSIVE DAMAGE DONE (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association) LONDON. 2nd Jan. Disastrous fires occurred in Manchester at the weekend. The first was at the Winter Gardens Cinema, where the damage amounted to £30.000. The second was in the well-known warehouse area in Caiinon Street, doing damage to the extent of £200,000. Lastly, a fire in Coventry ' Amirant was accompanied by a phenomenon arising mil of fused electric wiring. LIVINGSTONE’S CHURCH DESTROYED

The historic Livingstone Congregational Chapel in Stanford Rivers, Essex, was destroyed. Mrs Kenniford, who was conducting service, overturned an oil lamp as the service was starting and the chapel was quickly a mass of flames. .Mrs Kenniford cseaped with difficulty. Livingstone's Bible was destroyed. This church was the one in which Livingstone preached his first sermon. After mounting the pulpit ho was seized with nervousness and rushed out of the building.

In addition to Metter’s, seven.other buildings were badly damaged by water and blazing brands, some of which fell a quarter of a mile away. It was early recognised that there was no chance of saving Metter’s and the firemen concentrated their efforts to prevent the outbreak spreading.

THE DUNEDIN BLAZE

DUNEDIN, This Day No accurate estimate of the damage caused hv the Strand Restaurant fire on Sunday can yet he made. The insurance on the building and contents was £13,975, this including the Misses Gallaghers’ ladies’ outfitting shop. The insurance of Patterson Brothers, men’s outfitters, was £2200 on the stock. The damage is roughly £2OO. Misses Gallaghers’ stock was almost a total loss.

A nine-roomed dwelling owned by Mrs Baker, situated at Leamington, near Cambridge, was totally destroyed by fire at an early hour this morning. At the" time the only l occupants were Mrs Balter and two sons . The insurances were £IOOO on the building and £3OOO on the contents in the State Office. The brigade saved the garage and outbuildings.
