ANTI-CHRISTIAN FEELING INCREASING
MISSIONARIES.. PROCEEDING TO SAFETY ZONES

Anti-Chistian feeling and outrages in outlying provinces have increased to such an extent that all missionaries were advised to proceed to., the safety zones. Hitherto peaceful country folk have been ‘stirred nigh to fanaticism by agitators perpetrating outrages and incendiarism. All catholic bishops and nuns in districts surrounding ITnngkow were ordered to evacuate after the mission at Yang Shin Shan was attacked by a mob of 600. Priests were assaulted and driven out and the'church fired and destroyed. Priests and nuns escaped over the walls ’of the town, pursued by a howling mob. A seminary in the vicinity of Shnsi was looted and destroyed 'and priests stripped of clothing. A church at Hussein and mission homes were burned.
A mission at Tung Chan Sien, in the vicinity of Wuchang; was destroyed. Nttns in . a convent-at Shin iSh’en Kai were compelled to flee owing to continued interference bv soldiers. -
