(By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association)
PARIS, 31st Dec. An amazing story is told in connection with the discovery of tlie body of Francis Halama, a young married man, found hanging head downwards from a tree in a wood near Beauyais. "it was at first thought he had caught his foot ill a cleft- between the branches -while climbing and was unable to release himself. It has been disclosed, however, by a Russian working in the same factory that the terrorist custom still prevailed known as "torture of the tree," which was practised against any member of a band who betrayed his comrades. The practice was to wedge a man's leg in the fork of a tree so. that he could not possibly release himself, and leave him to perish. ...Tlie police came to the conclusion that Halama was a victim of this torture. •Six arrests have been effected.
