Mr J. C. Murray, of Wellington, manager of the Vacuum Oil Company, is visiting N.elscn. ■ . Mr Alf. Linley, touring manager of the Ferris Jazzland Revue Company, has returned to Wellington. His son, who is manager of the company, will leave for Wellington with the members of the company after to-night’s performance, on the way to Greymouth via Christchurch. So popular have been the “Jazzlanders” in this district that Messrs Linley hope to arrange for a return visit at a Inter date.

In the recent musical examinations, Mis,s Madge Barltrop, a pupil of Miss Winterburn, obtained honourable mention.

The Rev. G. Brown, of Onehunga, celebrated his 96th birthday cn Thursday. In tho morning the member of Parliament far Manukau (Mr W. J. Jordan) and Messrs J. E. Cowell (Mayor) and J. E. Green waited upon Mr Brown and conveyed to him greetings from the people of Onehunga. .

The General Assembly of the Presbyterian C'lnirch Ims decided to accept the resignation of Professor W. Hewitson, master of Knox College, as from 81st December, 1927. Regret was expressed at the prospect of losing the valuable services of Professor Hewitson.

Mr ’Archibald Newbury, baritone, his wife, Madam Phyllis Newbury, the well-known dramatic contralto, ' and daughter, Marie Newbury, the young lyric soprano, have arrived in Nelson, and will stay some weeks on route to their home in Australia, after a three years’ tour of the Dominion. Writing in reply to the request of a deputation he said: “If personal interests had been placed first, 1 should not have sought re-election after my present term of office ' had expired, hut the glove has been thrown down, and I accept the challenge, as much in defence of the good work of my fellow councillors as upon my own account."
