ENGINEER'S REPO.RT In concluding his report the Engineer stated:-- ~ . , Moutere Estuary Head. As directed, he had met two of the settlers interested in the road, and apparently they require the Council to have a road lane across the estuary legalised; they are also desirous of "having approximately ten chains metalled. Coltman) reported inter alia that live additional

heavy traffic licenses had -iuien issued, and additional drivers' licenses, mazing the total to date 1124. The t«>db casi) brought before the Court against a motorist for the indiscriminate use of a spot light; a case against a driver of a service car for overloading luggage; and three infonmj-tions f.ur speeding were referred to, convictions being recorded in all cases. The health inap.ec.tcn (Mr Coltman) submitted his monthly report, which was adopted.

CORRESPONDENCE

The following correspondence was dealt with :

From Minister of Railways, as to proposed advisory boards. —Received. Prom the Takaka County Council, asking for the services of Mr Coltman as heavy traffic inspector.—Deferred for consideration, pending further information.

From the Wesfland County Council, regarding assessment of standing timber. —Deferred for a month,. From J. A. Stuckfeerry, Mapua, applying for permission to erect telephone line.—Granted on usual conditions.

From a signwriting Firm, applying for permission to erect a sign board at the Wakapuaka gravel pit, offering £3 a year for five years.—Left to the member of the riding and the Engineer, with power to act.

From Nelson Automobile Association, offering to contribute £25 if the Council took up the Government grant for improving the corners on the Nelson-Lud-Rai Waddle road.—Agreed to without prejudice. From Hunter and Baldwin, asking the Council to extend during the summer months the carrying capacity of lorries over the Lud 'and Rail Saddle to 10 tons, instead of 8 tons as previously decided on. —Former resolution to be adhered to, the chairman ruling that Cr. Hewetson must give notice of motion to rescind the original resolution.

From C. Tomlinson, Waimea West, applying for permission to erect fence on road.—Referred to chairman and Engineer with power to act. , From C. A. Baigent, Wakefield, asking for repairs to road at foot of Dovedale Hill road.—Left to member for riding and the Engineer to deal with. From F. W. Batt, Tapawera, asking the Council to contribute to cost of installing a telephone in the workman's cottage.—No action. From F. E. Newport, Korere, offering to contribute to cost of a culvert on Horopito road, —Offer accepted, subject to approval of Engineer. From A. F. Kinzett, Kiwi, as to ditch near his property.—Referred to member for riding and Engineer. •From F. W. Gibbs, Tapawera, as to bad state of road from Friend Bros.' property to the old school.—Work already authorised.

From Tui Tennis Club offering 10/for damaged concrete pipe for roller.— Offer accepted.

From Pokororo Farmers' Union re Pearse bridge and formation of Pearse to Baton road.—To be informed that the strike at Home has.delayed delivery of steel girders for bridge; and that owing to no grant being on the Public Works Estimates for road formation the Council Can do nothing at present.—Several other requests in the same letter were dealt with in various ways'. From G. Strachan, Pangatotara, as to bad state of roads near Alexandra Bluff bridge.—Left to Engineer. From G. E. Farley, Lower Moutere, complaining of state of -Wilson's road.— Left to Engineer. From A. Yuile, Braeburn, applying for permission to erect a garage on roadside.—Referred to member of riding and Engineer. From Mapua Recreation Trustees) asking the Council to pass a by-law authorising the reserve to be used ror recreation, purposes-—The clerk explained that the reserve "was vested In the Crown, and therefore the Council had no jurisdiction.—lt was resolved to advise the writers to" approach the Lands Department with a view to getting the area vested in the trustees.

RAINY RIVER" DEPUTATION

: A deputation of Rainy River settlers waited on the Council urging that a bridge be erected over the river. Mr J. S. Wilkinson, who acted as spokesman, said settlers were greatly hampered in flood times, when they were practically isolated . He understood that the Government had promised £ISOO towards the cost of a bridge. There were about ten ratepayers in the district affected.

In reply to a question the Engineer said the estimated cost of a bridge was about £3250, and it would Be 250 ft long. Mr Wilkinson considered that a five span bridge would be sufficient. The Engineer pointed out that when the Government gave a subsidy they also gave instructions as to wha't style of bridge should be erected.

Mr Wilkinson, in reply to a question, said a light bridge would be sufficient to meet requirements. Mr Hudson, M.P., had written to th'e Department on this matter.

After the deputation had withdrawn, it was resolved on the motion of Cr. •Tones, seconded By Cr. Hewetson, that the Engineer obtain information .as to a light bridge and report to the next meeting.

GENERAL

On the motion of Cr. Jones, the Engineer was instructed to go into Hie matter of culverts on the TadmorTapawera road. In reply to Cr. Hagen, the Engineer said the work at Martin's groin had been held up owing to difficulty in procuring wire netting. He? thought it would be best to call for tenders for the work.

On the motion of- Cr. Hagen it was rcsolvecT to call for tenders. The matter of erecting a gate on Mr O'Connor's property at Woodstock in order to give access to the river for gravel supplies, was left to Cr Kenyon and the Engineer to arrange.

In reply to Cr Wilkinson, the Engineer said he would pay a visit to the Sliaggery road at an early dale. Cr. Wilkinson urged that protective work on the Motucka river road near Mr 0. Best's should be put in hand at once. There was a grant on the Estimates for this pin-pose. It was resolved that the Engineer prepare plans and specifications for the work, whilh is to be gone on with as soon as the grant, is forthcoming. Tlie Council then rose.
