AUCKLAND PREPARING FOR RECEPTION (United Press Association), AUCKLAND, 12th Oct. Contracts totalling £38,528 were let by the Auckland Electric Power Board for the purchase, of plant that will he needed to receive the. hydroe-electric power from Am pun i in 1928. Of the total amount £33,000 goes to British linns, and £B3OO to an American concern. One Swiss and one German firm also tendered for machinery, hut. in each instance the prices were higher than the lowest British tender.
A question whether the acceptance of an American tender was in order was raised. .Mr J. Rowe asked whether it was nut. a fact that the, hoard had a minute on its hooks binding it nut to accept, foreign tenders. The chairman (Mr W. J. Holdsworth): "No; the, resolution says we will give preference to British firms.” The general manager said that- in electrical matters he did not- regard American firms as being foreign. The American firm in question was one of the best in existence, and the machinery for which it had tendered was of high efficiency.
