CATHEDRAL FOR AUCKLAND

STATEMENT BY ARCHBISHOP AVER-ILL By Telegraph.—Special to "The Mail.") AUCKLAND, This Day. Reference, lo the fact that the Auckland Anglican diocese possesses no permanent cathedral was made by Archbishop Averill to-day in his presidential charge to the Diocesan Synod. The Archbishop referred lo the fact that in 1942 the Cluireli in New Zealand, and particularly in Auckland, would Lie celebrating the centenary of the arrival of the late Bishop Selwyn. It will he a reflection, said His Grace, upon the ideals, hopes and work of the great bishop if no definite steps have been taken within a. century to commence, the building of a. permanent, cathedral in the city of Auckland. The diocese of Christchurch possesses a permanent finished cathedral; the diocese of Dunedin has a. permanent nave of a stately cathedral ; the diocese of Nelson is lieginning to build a permanent cathedral : the diocese of Wellington is taking steps to build a permanent cathedral; the diocese of Waiapu possesses a permanent and beautiful cathedral. And what about Auckland, containing as it does such wonderful historical associations and such sacred memories of Bishop Sehvyn?” The Archbishop pointed out that it is now over 84 years since Bishop Selwyn purchased what is known as a cathedral site at Parnell, and yet no steps have been taken lo erect a cathedral on it, nor any real effort made to raise funds for the purpose, lie thought an effort should he made to start the work not. later than the centenary of Bishop Selwyn’s arrival, and lie proposed to ask Synod to appoint a commission to consider the question.
