DEPUTATION MEETS MINISTERS

MR McLEOD ON BORROWING SCO QESTIONS

AUCKLAND, This Day Tli{o Minis!ens of .Land and Labour were met yesterday by a deputation which urged that something more be done in the interests of unemployed. Replying to statements put forward Mr McT<,eod> Minister of Lands, said some extraordinary suggestions had been made. After referring to the effects of the 1921 slump he said it was suggested that as the country had readily borrowed money for war it could go on borrowing for measures to relieve unemployment. Local borrowing was largely out of the question for they knew they nearly crippled a number of internal industries by tin's form ot financing, n the Government whs not alive to the limits to which it could borrow abroad the lenders outside New Zealand were aware of the safely margin. Our credit was high and this was due lo the fact that we could claim that money borrowed was spent on reproductive works. After stating that the Lands Department had been in a peculiar position in that it had had to make good with money borrowed* with interest, Mr McLcod said if Parliament decided that a certain amount of this development money was to be provided from the Consolidated Fund lie was prepared to go along with the. development, but he was not going into any scheme he and his oflicors knew was not economical, lie added that, lie would be bringing down kind sett lenient proposals in the very near future, lie had not done this before as he knew borrowed money was required to assist people already on the land, and lie was not justified in asking for money for new purposes. The Minister contended that the Government had done as much as, if not more than, any other in the settlement of land.
