The figures of I lie banking returns (September quarler), show Mint advances plus fliscounls (the amounts borrowed by the public from the banks) exceed the combined free and fixed deposits 'the amounts borrowed by the hanks from the public) by £2,341,092. Adding the free deposits (current nccounl balances against which cheques can be drawn) to the notes in circulation provides n lest of spending power. For September, 1926, the fix bunks show free deposits £24.907,961, and circulation £-CAMA7>U. a total of £31.393,399. For September, 1925. the free deposits were iJ26.ni 1.762 and the circulation was £6,566,308, a total of £33,378,070. That means that in the September quarter, as compared with a year ago, spending power, measured in this wav, has eontracled by £1,984.681. The apparent reduction in imports has not arrived 100 soon.
