MORTALITY AMONGST LAMBS

The back country of Mid-Cmterbury is having the unusual experienci of snow in October. Following the dry mild winter conditions became rnoiit about 10 days ago with culmination at the week-end, when heavy rain fell hroughout the country, the fall in theborough for 24 hours ended 9 yesterday feing 143 points. Snort - fell in the back "Otintry, increasing in intensity last, niglt, three or four inches lying oh the gi'mnd at Staveley under the foothills. Tli'tre were similar conditions elsewhere in he high lands, the ffn.ll {.wing higher farther back.
The sudden change is causin; some mortality among lambs,' especiallyin the hill sections, where lambing is h progress. The conditions are now brghtenmg.
