DIPHTHERIA
CASE ON AN ISLAND STEAMER R..M.A. REPRESENTATIONS (United Pree* Anaociatiou.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The attention of the New Zealand branch of the R..M.A. was recently drawn to a case of diphtheria on board a steamer travelling from Auckland to Fiji, from which disease it- was said a patient died on landing. There was no medical officer attached to the ship and the patient was attended by a doctor •who-■•happened to lie a passenger. It was suggested that tin! case ended fatally owing to there being no supply of anti-toxin on the vessel. The council of tlie D.M.A. resolved that a copy of the correspondence be forwarded to the Health Minister as an additional argument in favour of the council's previous recommendation that steamers carrying over 100 persons and whose voyage exceeds three days should carry a qualified medical practitioner, and that the Minister's attention be directed to the necessity for ships carrying adequate medical supplies.
