MANCHURIA
FICTITIOUS REPORTS OF THE
FIGHTING
(By Electrio Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Auitralian A N.Z. Cable Association.)
TOKIO, Oct, 9
Reports alleging fighting in Manchuria between Chinese and Japanese soldiery, appear to be fictitious, being based on local newspaper paragraphs sensationally exaggerating squabbles betwpen Chinese and Korean squatters in the neighbourhood of Antung, on the south-eastern border of Manchuria. The Koreans, who are unpopular with the Chinese residents, claim the pro tection of the Japanese 'Consul against Chinese small farmers, who threaten to prevent Koreans harvesting small patches of rice. Chinese local police, with Japanese railway guards, are endeavouring to prevent violence. Korean squatters on the Korean border are a constant source of trouble, and are always anti-Japanese until the Chinese attack them, and then they seek Japanese protection.
