COMBATING THE PEAR MIDGE

PARASITE RELEASED IN NELSON ORCHARDS 'Mr D. .Miller, Government Entomologist, yestei'clay paid a hurried visit to Nelson, bringing with him some specimens of platygasler, a parasite of the pear midge. ' Mr .Miller could only spend a day here, and left again last evening, it being his intention lo proceed immediately to Auckland with further specimens of the parasite for liberation in northern orchards. In company with Mr J. H. Thorp, Mr Miller visited orchards at Stoke, Stewart's Estate, Tasman, and Riwaka, and liberated the parasite in each. Pear midge eggs were found, and it was observed that the parasite started operaliens on the eggs straight away. Three consignments of parasites were received by the Department last year from Europe, and Mr Miller, in the June issue of the "Journal of Agriculture," describes the work of establishing them., this necessitating; constant daily attention. The parasites brought to Nelson were raised from the imported slock and now that it has become ' acclimatised it is hoped that its depredations on the pear midge will reduce that pest, which had become a most serious one, to a minimum.
