Dr. Barnes, Bishop of Birmingham, made an amazing attack on HI. Francis of Assisi in the Birmingham Cathedral to-day. He .said the Assisi anniversary was widely used for religious propaganda, Inn personally he was distressed and repelled. "Harsh (rut Its were a good tonic for the soul. St. Francis' last illness was a state of seuii-ecslasy and semi-delirium. If the poverty St. Francis commanded was a really Christian ideal we should rapidly degenerate into barbarism.''
