PROFESSIONAL RUGBY IN WALES
(From Our Own Correspondents)
LONDON, Jtilv 29
Wales has been the chief feedingground for the professional Rugby League clubs of Yorkshire and Lancashire, and more than one attempt has been made to establish the thirteenaside game in the Principality. The. chief obstacle lias been that there are not. enough clubs ready to "go over to form a separate- competition, and the two counties arc too far o'lf AN ales to make if possible, without adding greatly to travelling expenses, to embrace. them in the Northern tournaments. But the professional clubs can always get recruits from Wales when they want them. 'They offer a sum down, find work for the men. and pay them a wage for each match in which they take part. Now. however, a new scheme is being launched. lliis is to ge! bold of tin* comparatively small clubs, form a League on the thirteen aside principle, ami let them play as amateurs. If it comes about, it will be the first step towards professionalism, in Welsh Rugby. The Welsh Rugby Union are more than a little concerned about it. Already ii is foil that the game is losing ground, and it is (lie intention during the coming season to pay more attention lo the spectacular side of it.
