AN IMPORTANT WORK

IMPROVED ACCESS TO BRITANNIA HEIGHTS OLD DANGERS REMOVED Tito City Council is to be congratulated on the great improvement" effected on the main road to Britannia Heights. The old road was extremely steep, and in wet weather dangerous. With the increasing traffic, a serious accident was inevitable. The steep hill at the head of Washington Valley has been avoided by taking the road higher up the hillside on land given to the city by Mr G. Newton at the corner and Mr E. 11. P.islev further down. This gives an easy grade In Richardson si reel. Hie old narrow culling has been completely widened out, avoiding risk of accident through cars meeting at, the top. Under the old conditions there was no opportunity of knowing what was coming round the corner, and no chance of manoeuvring should a collision appear probable. The work lias also included removing a large slice off a dangerous corner further up the hill, and widening the road considerably. This portion of the hill was the most- dangerous part in wet weather. There was hardly room for two vehicles to pass and the road was always so slippery that the danger was that the vehicle coming down the hill would slide over the edge of the road down the embankment into the gully below.

Recent years have seen a big increase in the traffic on the hill and consequently the danger was an increasing one.

Now, however, thanks to the good work of the Council, not only has the grade to the hill been greatly improved, which is important in developing the residential area, but a very real danger to all traffic has been removed.
