SPANISH PLOT

OF A COMMUNIST CHARACTER

MADRID, June 25. A semi-official message minimises the plot, which is declared to be of a Communist rather than a Liberal character. Officers involved acted individually and none were on the active list. Nevertheless arrests were made. Those arrested will be tried by a competent tribunal.

VIGOROUS ACTION BY GOVERNMENT

MADRID, June 26,

The Premier, in a statement to the press, declared the plo-t was organised by a few persons on the pretext that they were deprived of liberty and a genuinely constitutional regime. The Premier claims that an immense majority of Spaniards wish the present regime and Government, to continue, and demand severe measures against unscrupulous persons seeking to disturb the country. . The Government decided on vigorous action against culprits. , PARIS, June 26.

Le Matin says the insurrection in Spain is directed against De Rivera, with whom junta officers are most dissatisfied owing to his reintroduction of the method of promoting in the army by choice instead of seniority. Discontented officers have joined political elements hostile to the Government.

ROYALTIES DEPART FOR ENGLAND

MADRID, June 26.

Their iMajesties departed for Paris en route to England, where King Alfonso will receive the honorary degree of the Oxford University. They had an enthusiastic send off.
