PARADISE DUCKS. BECOMING DESTRUCTIVE
PROGRESS OF DAIRYING INDUSTRY
Winter so- far has been fairly .mild for. this district, although exceptionally wet in-the early part. Paradise ducks have .been very destructive on turnip: cropsS One paddock of six acres had been'entirely stripped of the green leaves. Eighty ducks have been seen at one time on one patch of: turnips. The Golden Dawn butter factory closed down for the winter at the end., of last month, and will open again early in, September. Dairying will be the chief industry in this valley in the near future. There is some very fine open flat.country, as yetin its natural state, growing flax and scrub. The pay-* out for butter fat last season was as
,high as 1/8, per lb, and the lowest month 1/4, Some settlers are improving their herds by the introduction of pedi:gree, stock, :rwith ; butter-fat backing.
