END OF FOOTBALL
fiiiHSCiSD Important decisions were reversed for the last day of the football season. Huddeisiield had won the championship I'm the flii«ii year in succession, thus setling up a record, but the bolluni-of-the-liiblc problem had to be'solved. Thre< clubs were concerned in this, Handlesicr City, Burnleyj&and Leeds United, and one of them Was bound to accompany Nuts ( oiuity into Hie Second Division. 1 'Mauriaster City had Hie advantage of one point, from bulb their nvals, bid, against I ins. their final game, was away at Newcastle whereas Burnley and' Leeds United wen- at home. 'l'l'iis meant that Ihe City, in Ihe event of the oilier two teams winning, would have al leasl to draw. The end was thai Manchesier City wvrr defeated by three goal:, to two, and hotli Burnley ..nd Leeds United won. So the City will next scasjei be members of the second division. Theii experience is without parallel in the history of the League. (In Ihe on \ iuus Saturday lliey had appeared in the (up final, .and though fic'iteu. had played some of the best font ball seen during the season. But all through it has been impossible to reconcile their Cup form with that in the League. In the ordinary matches their defence had been woefully weak, and though (he forwards had proved themselves expert scorers, thev could not make, goud the deficiencies in the rear division. It was the old story at Newcastle. Three goals were conceded to Newcastle United, all being obtained by (iiillacher. tin centre forward. Wet at Ihe finish iheir supporters had the feeling that they oiiglif not to have been beaten.
