SALE OF WEMBLEY
"A WORRIED-LOOKING MAN" LONDON, June 15. There was an amusing scene at Wembley when the British Empire Exhibition buildings were offered at auction. The auctioner. Sir Frank Howard, asked : "Who will bid hall' a million?" A worried-looking man in spectacles called out : "I've got a. lot of questions to ask," and began to read a rambling history of the exhibition. Sir'Frank Howard interrupted him and asked: "What will you bid?" The man. waving bis papers in the air, shouted: "I think I'm entitled to the property because I got 10.000 bonds. I'm a peaceful man, but I'm going to win." Sir Frank Howard replied: ■'l'm sure you are." After this the man in spectacles subsided. The first offer of £200.000 advanced by £IO.OOO bids till £300,000 was readied. A man responded to the auctioneer's invitation and bid £315.000. Sir Frank Howard asked was there any advance, but his question was received in silence. He then announced that he had a better private offer, which he expected to complete before night. The proceedings lasted ten minutes.
Cablegrams published last week stated that Wemblev had been purchased for £500.000 by Mr J. White, chairman of the Reacham Trust.
