The Daily Mail in approving of I,lie international conference, at Wa.'fhington dealing with oil-driven fillips’ pollution of (lie sea. points out that the oil discharged annually amounts to over half a million barrels, and there was scarcely a town on the British coast which had not sull'ered from this trouble. There are now meagre catches of fish where formerly it was abundant. The Daily Mail also argued that the film of oil was responsible for climatic changes, as if. was affecting the rainfall and tin* balance of electricity in the atmosphere. The theory seems far-fetched, but since oil lias been generally used there lias been a series of bad-weather years in Britain, although it may be due to the usual periodical fluctuations.
