Adjutant Sum Haves,, of the Salvation Army, who joined the organisation from Nelson some sixteen years ago, is at present visiting Nelson. He first went to Melbourne to be trained. He served in the ranks’ for four. I ,years at the war, losing a leg and being severely knocked about generally. He acted as a chaplain for a time on lus return. After the war he served in tho Army . Accounts Department at headquarters. Later he was- appointed.... Divisional Young People’s Secretary. Wellington. His district also embraces .Ne.lson, . Marlborough, W&irarapa, and Mqtueka. V Professor H. Stewart, of Canterbury College, has been appointed to the Chair of Latin in the University of Leeds, England. He will assume his new duties in October. In this position, Professor Stewart succeeds. Professor B. M. Connal, a- distinguished early'graduate of Canterbury College.—Press Association.

Mr J. D. Bruce, one of the representatives of county councils on the Main Highways Board, and tho only South Island member, who has been on sick leavo for some time]i'is 7 now much better and hopes to be able to resume duty shortly. Meanwhile lie is keeping in touch with tho work of the board.

At the last meeting of the Wellington Education Board the chairman (Mr T. Forsth, M.P.)' moved a vole of appreciation of the services rendered to education by Mr C. I. Harkness during bis eight years’ service as.a member, be having declined to accept re-election owing to his removal from the Manawatu district to Pukekohe, near Auckland. He said that Mr Ilarkness had rendered yeoman servico to t,he r schools. ’ Other members of the .hoard added their regrets at Mr Harkness’s departure, and wished him every prosperity. A motion of regret at his loss and of good wishes for his future was carried.
