FIRE ON OPIHI
ORIGINATES IN DUNEDIN CARGO .MAY HAVE BEEN CAUSED BY MATCHES (United Press Assoi iation.) NEW PLYMOUTH, June 14.
The fire on the Opihi was discovered about 8 a.m. when the vessel was oil Cape Egmonl. Full speed was made for port. On arrival the vessel was berthed at Mol urea wharf and (lie fire brigade was called. The hatches.. were lifted and emergency gangs put on to discharge a cargo of 90l> tons. Whitish smoke and the smell ) of roasted potatoes came from the hold, apparently between hatches two and three on the starboard side. About one o'clock flmnes were seen issuing from some timber. "• The fire brigade turned the hose on and' subdued them.
Tne works of discharging is ,proceeding interruptedly, hut the actual seat of the fire has not vet been reached.
It apparently originated in the Dun edin oargq,. which included matches.
