MEETING AT "LOWER MOUTERE

The last regular meeting of the Lower Moutere branch' of the'Loyal Motueka Lodge, held on Tuesday last, will rank as.a meinprable occasion in the history of the Manchester Unity in the Nelson province. • The honour of. holding the tirst Oddfellows' meeting in New Zealand belongs to Nelson, , that meeting being heia on Thursday 7th April 1842, near the present site of the Auckland Point school. From that memorable event tho-Manchester Unity has grown in the province and in New Zealand, but as far as the Nelson province is concerned the meetings have, like those of most lodges, been exclusively for. -men. It wag'therefore'with pleasure that the lioyal Motueka Lodge initiated the first ■' female members at" Lower Moutere, extending to the fair sex * h » privileges of insuring against sickness and dis- '• tress which the Order has previously extended in this province to males only. The initiation ceremony was conduct-! ed by 'he N.G. Bro. E. J. Wills, assist-. \ ed by I.P.N.G. Bro. T. Goodall; V.G. ' Bro. C. Limmer; conductor Bro A. Brougham. Two initiation ceremonies ■were held in which five ladies were ini-.' ' tiated and two men. The D'.S. P.G. Bro. Canavan extend-, ed congratulations to the branch on its ' forward move and wished the branch '. every, success; j The Lodge was then closed. A most enjoyable supper was supplied . by members after which a happy hour was spent in social/amusements.
